The Hindu religion teaches that when someone dies, the soul passes into another body. This belief in reincarnation underpins Hindu funeral traditions. Although different groups have slightly varied practices, there is a common set of Hindu funeral rites that they all follow.

It is believed that after death, the soul of the body carries for 13 days, unable to sever its relationships with the body and family. On the 13th day, the soul must detach itself and move on.
